On October 1st, Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire at concert-goers attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. This event has gone down as one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history, killing 58 people and injuring 500 others. Police reported 23 firearms, explosives, and several thousand rounds of ammo in the suite. The Las Vegas Strip has 24 casinos in a 4 mile stretch. Paddock was known around town, especially at Mandalay Bay. He stayed there for free that week as a loyal customer gift.
Paddock was known as a constant gambler with no previous history of criminal records. However, Paddock's father was on the FBI's Most Wanted List during the 60's and 70's for bank robberies. I presented this scenario to the Security and Risk Analysis Club in the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State University. I have served on the executive board for the past two years. The club utilized IBM Analyst Notebook to map out and timeline the events of the shooting. As more analysis is discovered, the club can expand on individual works. Analyst Notebook is a key application in the intelligence community because it helps organize and group people, objects, and events. I expect to utilize this tool in my future endeavors.
